SNES and PS2 games still look good and playable today, for example. Obviously, there have still been minor improvements since then, but those were the eras where the last major improvements were made. Like 2D graphics hit their peak with SNES, and 3D graphics hit their peak with the PS2. Nothing to do with being old and everything to do with diminishing returns. Though I can't help but think "maybe I'm just getting old" when I consider graphics are starting to be thoroughly unimportant to me despite that, but even then I'll still take a good game with average graphics over a mediocre one that sets graphics cards on fire (as evidenced by me liking Solasta, the king of potato faced NPCs). I kind of feel the same in a way, maybe late PS360 or the middle of the following generation at the latest.īut to me a good art style can age better than any top of the line realism, no need for high end lighting effects or textures so high resolution that they cause lag just by being on screen for me to enjoy something. Tbh I think graphics have hit the maximum in the PS3/360 era and it hasn't wowed me ever since.Īesthetic and scene composition matter more.
